Daihatsu Hijet
VS
Subaru Sambar

The Daihatsu Hijet and Subaru Sambar are the two most refined kei trucks in the Japanese mini truck market — both standing apart from the Suzuki/Honda workhorses by offering something extra. The Hijet brings exceptional cab comfort and the legendary Climber off-road package. The Sambar brings a unique rear-engine AWD system and an optional supercharged engine. Choosing between them depends entirely on what 'better' means to you.

Choose the Daihatsu Hijet When…

Choose the Daihatsu Hijet if off-road capability, extended-cab space, or a factory-lifted variant are on your list. The Climber package is unique — no equivalent factory off-road package exists in the Sambar lineup. The Jumbo extended cab gives real legroom for multiple passengers. The Hijet also has a larger US parts network than the Sambar.

Choose the Subaru Sambar When…

Choose the Subaru Sambar if always-on AWD traction, a low deck height for easy loading, or the supercharged EN07 engine appeals to you. The Sambar's rear-engine layout gives it excellent natural traction without requiring a transfer case. For orchard, golf course, and loading-intensive work, the Sambar's low deck is a meaningful practical advantage.

Our Verdict

Off-road adventure and passenger comfort: Hijet Climber/Jumbo. AWD convenience, low deck, and engineering character: Sambar. Both are excellent choices for buyers who want something beyond the standard workhorse kei truck.
