Subaru Sambar
VS
Suzuki Carry

The Subaru Sambar and Suzuki Carry are both 4-wheel traction kei trucks, but they take completely different roads to get there. The Carry uses a traditional selectable 4WD system with hi/lo transfer. The Sambar uses a permanent AWD system driven by its rear-mounted engine — no lever to pull, always ready. That single difference shapes almost everything else about these trucks.

Choose the Subaru Sambar When…

Choose the Subaru Sambar for easier, always-on AWD operation and a lower deck height. The rear-engine layout puts weight over the drive axle for excellent traction even in 2WD-like situations. The Sambar with a supercharged engine is notably peppy. For enclosed cargo, the Dias van body is unique to the Sambar lineup.

Choose the Suzuki Carry When…

Choose the Suzuki Carry for selectable 4WD with a proper low-range gear — essential for true rock crawling and steep descents. The Carry has the largest US aftermarket support of any kei truck, making finding parts and knowledgeable mechanics easier. It's also typically available at a lower starting price.

Our Verdict

For easy traction without thinking about it: Sambar. For serious off-road with low-range gearing and maximum parts support: Carry.
